The Standard Behind Every Bottle: Our Product Tests, Fail-Safes, and Commitment to Quality

Key Takeaways:

  • The boundaries around quality supplement production aren’t what they should be. That’s why we’ve built our own non-negotiable testing process to make sure each BodyBio supplement meets our standards for purity, quality, and potency.
  • A quality supplement should be safe, effective, free from contaminants, nutrient-dense, and still potent after a few months on the shelf. The only way to verify all of these qualities is through rigorous external testing and traceable sourcing.
  • Each BodyBio supplement has its own story. It starts with a three-part evaluation that covers sourcing, production, and testing—all before the supplement lands in your hand. A huge percentage of our profits goes right back into quality control—and more than 10% of BodyBio’s team is dedicated to supplement purity and safety.

Here’s something you need to know about the supplement market: The barrier to entry is incredibly low. It’s not difficult to create a new brand, dropship supplements, or source cheap raw materials without adequate product testing.

Since we work in this space, we have a front-row seat to just how easy it is to sell supplements without any formal standards. That’s why we’re so intentional about creating our own boundaries and testing protocols, so that no bottle slips through the cracks and every formula goes above and beyond expectations.

As a brand that works with doctors, it’s our responsibility to make sure each product meets the highest standard of purity and nutrient density. And our customers shouldn’t have to become scientists to know our supplements are the real deal. So let’s unpack it: Here are the standards that make us a household name for supplement quality and transparency.

First, a Little Background: How Are Supplements Regulated?

Dietary supplements are regulated like food products. To go on the market, a supplement needs a facts label, ingredients list, serving size, and amount per serving on the bottle. Beyond that, the supplement isn’t subject to premarket approval, review, or testing before it’s sold.

In practice, a lot can go wrong here. It’s fully up to the brand to maintain quality standards. That means testing batches to confirm nutrient density, staying true to the label, and checking for contaminants all depend on the brand’s budget and priorities. Some brands even source the full supplement from overseas without doing their own tests.

Naturally, this leads to discrepancies over what’s on the label and what’s in the product. Recent studies show that up to 51% of supplements are mislabeled—and the FDA rarely takes action or checks in with brands. This leaves a lot of room for error with purity, dilution, safety, shelf stability, and potency. In other words, brands are fully in charge and not always trustworthy.

BodyBio’s Definition of a Quality Supplement

Supplement companies love to brag that their ingredient label matches what’s actually in the bottle. But at BodyBio, this isn’t a selling point. It’s exactly how supplements should be. We believe a quality supplement must go through multiple checks and balances to assess shelf stability, contamination, and nutrient density.

To us, a quality supplement is clean, free from unnecessary additives, flavors, and fillers, and formulated to maintain its potency and stability through its expiration date. Before launching a product, we conduct stability studies to determine its shelf life. Then, with every production run, we perform rigorous in-house and third-party testing to make sure each batch meets its label claims. Auditing, testing, and reviewing supplements take a lot of hands-on work, which is why we have an entire team dedicated to quality control. If a brand doesn’t have that kind of oversight, there’s a good chance these important checks and balances aren’t happening.

The supplement formula itself should be cutting-edge, too. For us, it’s led by responsible science that redefines how well we care for our cells. Each of our supplements goes through years of formulation and scientific review to fit and anticipate the needs of our community. We look at potency and how your body uses the supplement. We also look at nutrient depletion in the modern diet and pinpoint how to fill the gaps.

Why BodyBio Is a Household Name for Supplement Quality

We break supplement testing into three categories: Sourcing, production, and third-party testing. Within these categories, our supplements go through a five-step evaluation process that starts with the raw materials and ends when the formula is bottled and ready to ship to you.

Step 1: Raw Material Sourcing

We start with a global search for the world’s best raw materials. This means we interview the top manufacturers in the industry. They share their certificates and complete our extensive questionnaire—which gives us an idea of their safety protocols, processing methods, and how they preserve delicate nutrients.

Once a manufacturer is qualified and passes all these tests, we ship their raw materials to our laboratory for something called an assay and contamination test. These tests look for product potency, contaminants like mold, yeast, bacteria, heavy metals, and microbes, and confirm they land below a safe threshold. Essentially, it’s our way of double-checking that all the manufacturer’s claims are true.

If all testing meets our standards, then we send a BodyBio team member to the manufacturing facility to perform a final in-person audit. We’ll continue to send team members any time something changes in production, and annually for routine verification.

Step 2: In-House Production

The raw materials land in New Jersey, and from there it's our job to make sure every formula holds up. Each batch stays in quarantine until our quality team tests and releases it. We also pull samples from every batch and keep them for at least three years, so we always have a reference if a question ever comes up. Separately, we run real-time and accelerated stability studies on representative batches to confirm that potency and composition hold up over time, even when a bottle isn't opened right away.

All raw materials are tested before they move into production, confirming they meet our standards from the start. Sometimes, when materials are ordered in bulk, manufacturers struggle to keep up with demand and product quality lapses — it's our job to make sure that doesn't accidentally happen.

Finally, we understand that every formula and bottle size performs differently. Bottle size affects the internal environment a product is stored in, and the amount of headspace and air inside a bottle can influence stability too. For example, our BodyBio PC comes in three different liquid sizes, so we test all three separately. We also test the same formula across both capsule and liquid versions to account for how each format holds up on its own.

Step 3: Our Four-Step External Testing Process

Since we make/manage our supplements in our own facilities, we have full control over the testing process. We start by testing the raw materials when they arrive at BodyBio headquarters, then we test the product when it’s mixed and ready to be bottled. Finally, each batch is tested once it’s in the container and ready to use.

The goal of this process is to check for contaminants, like mold, heavy metals (like mercury, lead, and arsenic), microbes, yeast, and bacteria. We also want to make sure the supplement meets our standards for potency and lack of contamination—and actually lives up to its label claims. We do this with a third-party certified lab test called an assay.

We also vet our third-party testers to make sure they’re doing everything by the book. If they drop the ball on something, we look for a different lab. The results of these tests are published online with a lot number—so you can always check for yourself to see what the independent labs found in your supplements.

Because of our rigorous internal testing, it’s not uncommon for our team to toss an entire batch of product or raw materials if they don’t meet our strict manufacturing criteria. We would rather lose the profit than give our customers something that fails our standards, is ineffective, or puts any of our customers in harm's way. Both the tests and the product loss are expensive—and profit margins are often the reason other brands don’t hold these same quality checks.

What’s an Assay Test and How Does BodyBio’s Work?

An Assay is more of a measurement of potency than potential contamination. Assay = label claim verification. Contaminants will need to be below a certain threshold to pass the assay test. We require an assay test for raw materials, and the manufacturer must pass for microbes, heavy metals, bacteria, yeast, and mold. We also use them to check our final formulas in-house to make sure they’re safe, potent, and ready to be used.

BodyBio’s Supplement Fail-Safes

The bottle you hold in your hand is nutrient-dense, shelf-stable, and free from contaminants. But that’s only because we do so much behind the scenes to make sure of it. Here’s a non-exhaustive list of our supplement fail-safes:

  • We have an official manufacturing team and the Head of Quality chooses our suppliers.

  • If a supplement fails any part of our four-step testing process, we scrap the whole batch and begin again.

  • If a supplement comes in different bottle sizes, we test all of them.

  • The BodyBio team spends multiple years formulating just one supplement.

  • We never take the manufacturer’s word for it. In addition to their certificates and our own testing, we do an in-person audit of the facility.

  • If anything changes in raw materials sourcing or production, we send a team member to audit the facility.

  • Over 10% of BodyBio’s workforce is dedicated to quality assurance.

  • In addition to our own tests, we select and qualify a third party to test the supplements who maintain ISO and/or cGMP certification (and we make sure that third party upholds the highest standards).

  • We’re willing to walk away from a product that doesn’t meet our standards, even if that product is highly profitable for the brand.

  • Our rigorous testing standards often mean stalls in production. But we’d rather sacrifice revenue than sell a product that isn’t good enough.

What Happens Behind Closed Doors Is Your Business

We love a clean ingredients label, but it doesn’t share the full story behind how a supplement is made. Sourcing, production, third-party tests, nutrient density, and even health guidance all play a role in the quality of your product. And customers who pay money for high-quality supplements deserve to know what’s going on behind the scenes.

Since the FDA doesn’t require premarket testing, this puts even more responsibility on the brand to verify safety and potency. And our customers shouldn’t just take our word for it. They deserve to know exactly what’s in every bottle—and trust that each batch is safe, effective, transparent, and worth their dollar.
